Why that grade UK Smart Export Guarantee and Feed-in Tariff closure dates are directly documented government policy; US net metering variation by state is well established. Course-seller index 0/10.

Figures are researched estimates, not guarantees. Check local rules before you trade.

Why anybody pays for this

Grid operators need renewable electricity and will pay for surplus power a homeowner's solar system generates beyond their own household use — a genuine, if modest, byproduct income of an already-made solar investment.

This is educational information, not a return projection. The UK's Smart Export Guarantee pays for exported electricity at rates well below the closed Feed-in Tariff scheme; the US uses state-by-state net metering with widely varying payment structures.

Good fit if

Someone already installing or considering solar for the primary reason of reducing their own electricity bill, for whom export payments are a secondary bonus.

Skip it if

Anyone installing solar purely to chase export payments as a standalone income strategy — the economics only make sense as part of a full household solar payback calculation.

What actually goes wrong

The main financial risk is the multi-thousand-dollar upfront solar installation cost and genuine payback-period uncertainty, since export tariff rates can change and vary significantly between suppliers.

Decide

01

Install a qualifying solar PV system

CA$8,126 · 2 hrs

This is the major upfront cost and decision — solar PV is by far the most common qualifying generation type.

Done when Your solar PV system is installed, inspected and generating, with a completed installer certificate on file.

02

Get a compliant export meter installed

CANNOT TRADE UNTIL DONE

Install an export-capable smart meter alongside your solar PV system — this is what actually measures and bills for the electricity you send back to the grid. Most installers can fit it at the same time as the panels, but confirm this separately, since some basic meters don't support export billing.

Done when Your export-capable smart meter is installed and confirmed by your supplier as compliant for billing exported electricity.

Exit options

The solar installation itself has resale value as a home improvement, but the export payment stream has no separate exit.
