Why that grade Ranges are drawn from two industry blog posts, not an operator income survey - treat as indicative, not guaranteed. Course-seller index 3/10.
Figures are researched estimates, not guarantees. Check local rules before you trade.
Why anybody pays for this
Creators and brand teams produce more video than they can edit themselves and want consistent turnaround without hiring in-house - AI tools speed up the mechanical parts but someone still has to make it watchable.
$100-1,000+ per project; retainer clients $500-3,000/mo; a booked solo editor with several clients commonly nets $3-8k/mo.
Good fit if
Someone who already understands pacing and story, and wants to use AI tools to edit faster, not someone hoping AI does the editing for them.
Skip it if
Anyone expecting fully automated editing to sell itself - clients pay for judgment, and 'I ran it through an AI tool' is not a pitch.
What actually goes wrong
AI editing tools have lowered the skill floor for entry-level competitors, so your differentiation has to be storytelling/pacing judgment, not tool access - clients can get 'auto-cut' anywhere.
AI tools have compressed per-project time, which is good for your margins but has also let more non-specialists into the market.
Recurring weekly-deadline clients are the most stable income but also the most relentless - burnout is real if you take on too many at once.

Install and get licensed access to an editing suite (Premiere or DaVinci Resolve), Descript for text-based rough cuts, Topaz for upscaling, and ElevenLabs or HeyGen for dubbing. You don't need to have mastered any of them yet, just have them installed and working.
Done when You have working logins for an editing suite (Premiere or DaVinci Resolve), Descript, and at least one upscaling or dubbing tool, tested on a sample clip.

Learn a repeatable pipeline: Descript for text-based rough cuts, then manual pacing/story pass, then AI upscaling and auto-captions as a finishing layer. Time yourself so you know your real hourly economics.
Done when You've timed yourself running a full Descript rough-cut, then a manual pacing pass, then AI finishing on one real clip, and know your real hours-per-finished-minute.
Watch out: Don't skip the manual story/pacing pass - that's the part clients are actually paying for.
